Paradise trees and the origin of the Christmas tree.

Originally used in a medieval play about Adam and Eve and represented the Garden of Eden, the trees were decorated with apples, candies, nuts and berries as well as communion wafers. A widely held belief is that Martin Luther was the first to put candles on a tree after seeing the stars shining through an evergreen forest.
Another German tradition is a wooden carousel called the Christmas Pyramid. It typically holds candles and is decorated with nativity scenes and other Christian imagery. By the 16th century, the Paradise tree and the Christmas Pyramid consolidated and became what we now know as the Christmas tree!
