Evergreens in ancient traditions.
Well before we used Christmas trees to celebrate, evergreen plants were used to decorate homes and celebrate the winter solstice. The ancient Egyptians celebrated the sun God, Ra recovering from sickness at the solstice by laying down green palm leaves to symbolize life triumphing over death.
Romans would decorate their homes and temples with evergreen boughs during their solstice celebration Saturnalia which honoured their god of agriculture, Saturn.
Even the Celtic Druids used evergreen boughs to decorate their temples as a symbol of everlasting life. and their undying Goddess. They brought the Celts a sense of hope for the suns return in the spring.
You too can carry on the tradition of bringing evergreens into your home with fresh green boughs or a premium Christmas tree both available right here at Gardeners Junction!
